Communication is Care

Every May, the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) raises awareness for hearing loss and communication disorders with Better Speech and Hearing Month (BSHM).

This year, the theme is “Communication is Care,” to raise awareness on hearing loss affecting children and teens. The World Health Organization estimates that 1.1 billion young people around the world are at risk for permanent hearing loss. This is due, in part, to the rise in personal electronic devices and the extended use of earbuds and/or headphones.

Hearing loss in children causes adverse effects in verbal and emotional development. If left untreated, hearing loss may interfere with academics, future vocational choices, and social health. Learn more about pediatric hearing loss and how hearing aids support childhood development here.

In children, it is important to catch hearing loss early on. To learn more about signs of hearing loss in children, go here. If you suspect your child is exhibiting signs of hearing loss, contact us for a consultation and evaluation at Green Tree Audiology.

Whether or not your child may exhibit signs of hearing loss, it is important to schedule annual hearing checks – not unlike a general physical or eye checkup. If hearing loss is present, your audiologist will recommend hearing aids as a corrective measure. Currently, there are many advanced technological solutions available for children and teens. Here are a few of our standout hearing aids designed specifically for young people.

Phonak offers a line of pediatric hearing aids called SkyQ, customizable to treat many different degrees of hearing loss. The SkyQ is available in a number of exciting colors to help kids express themselves! SkyQ hearing aids are worn receiver-in-canal or behind-the-ear, which allows a lot of room to accommodating growing children. Additionally, SkyQ is compatible with a line of assistive listening devices from Phonak called Roger, which gives kids an extra boost in the classroom. The Bluetooth microphone and Clip-on Mic from Roger amplifies sounds in difficult listening situations, with extra clarity on speech in noise. Roger Inspiro is designed specifically for academic settings, to capture and enhance speech.

Starkey Hearing Technologies

Starkey Hearing Technologies has a line of pediatric-friendly products, in behind-the-ear style to accommodate growth. The BTE style of hearing aid requires new earmolds every few years to ensure the best fit – but the mechanical component of the hearing aid remains the same, worn over the back of the child’s ear. Starkey offers BTE pediatric hearing aids in a number of colors, with fast and powerful sound processing, FM assistive listening technology compatibility, and excellent understanding of speech in noise.

From ReSound, there is the Up Smart hearing aid, designed especially to treat pediatric hearing loss. As a BTE hearing aid, ReSound’s Smart Hearing gives kids room to grow while still providing advanced and clear sound. As durable and tamperproof hearing aids, Up Smart hearing aids are resilient and give confidence for the most active kids. With heightened audibility, ReSound Up Smart hearing aids assist with childhood language acquisition and language skills. With a wireless microphone available from ReSound, school-aged children receive an extra boost in noisy situations, which helps with speech focus in classroom settings.
